Nicolina's Story (Hardback)
Nicolina's Story
A Woman of the Land
La Contadina Nicolina
by Domenica Davies
(Hardback Edition)
This is the story of La Contadina Nicolina. A woman who embodies the true essence of being of a mother, daughter, wife and friend. A woman whose story you will never forget and whose courage you will always admire.
A three-day labour with her first child rendered her mute for twelve days. Now, decades later, La Contadina Nicolina has given a voice to her remarkable story.
The year was 1937, in a small town in Italy’s south a little peasant girl - just seven years old - was sent to work on the land to help her mother cultivate fruits and vegetables. While her hands held the fruits of her labour, her mind held dreams of another life, dreams of an education. She ached for an education so much that for ten years she slept with her only school book under he pillow.
A decade later Nicolina migrated to Australia. Excited by the prospect of a new life her mind was ignited with ambitious hopes of getting a good education. Who was to know that a life of gruelling farmwork and an arranged marriage awaited her.
Nicolina refused to let her life’s obstacles deter her. She nurtured and loved a family of five children and, through sheer determination, worked tirelessly to provide them with the opportunities she never had. Her faith and self-motivation transcended her sorrows and paved the way for her children to live successful lives with meaningful vocations.
Nicolina's Story not only offers a retelling of family history and vivid recollections of the experience of migration, it also gives timeless insights and inspiration for facing life's greatest challenges with determination and love.
